As Jan Morris wrote, TRIESTE stands for everything that is exotic about Central Europe – including coffeehouses and a hybrid of cultures and languages – all framed by its grand port architecture. It is where Austro Hungary meets Italy, physically and spiritually and Greek meets Serb. Within easy reach lie the Byzantine Church of San Giusto, influenced by Venice, classical remains, the powerful buildings by Max Fabbiani an echo of early 20th century wealth and King Maximilian of Mexico ’s Castle at Miramare. A major extension of the Venice Biennale to Trieste is planned soon, so the waterfront will be invigorated. But perhaps visit now while the aura of nostalgia, such as in the wonderful Museo Morpurgo and the elegant Museo Revoltella hangs over the city.
