We have taken several tours to Macedonia. It suits those who love wild landscape and fine Byzantine frescoes combined with few tourists although Turks are beginning to re-visit their old Empire in increasing numbers. Skopje has some very interesting museums and good Ottoman architecture. After the earthquake in 1963 there were a series of interesting buildings financed by the international community. Ohrid has some outstanding churches, it became the haven for monastic scriptoria when the rest of the Balkans had succumbed to invaders. Bitola, where Ataturk was at school, was politically important. It makes an interesting visit with its ancient Turkish centre before Heraclea with its outstanding floor mosaics. Tetovo has a largely Albanian population and a fine painted mosque. Additional short visits can be arranged to KOSOVO.
