Sirmium to Sofia…
between Rome and Byzantium

A 9-day journey through Serbia, which finishes in Sofia, Bulgaria

On this journey, we visit some of the key cities and stopping places on the great Roman military and later pilgrim route between the Danube and Constantinople. Several later Roman emperors were born in the region and retained an attachment to it throughout their lives, and we will visit the splendid remains of their fortresses and palaces. Here are lands that have always been on the crossroads of empires, endlessly finding themselves on the frontline. Most surviving treasures were buried for safety and only discovered thousands of years later. But among the great architectural jewels of the region are the monasteries, often hidden away in the hills with some surviving frescoes representing a high point of medieval Byzantine art. And there are other glorious highlights on this trip too – the Mesolithic fish-head figures at Lepinski Vir and the opportunity to meet Serbian writers and intellectuals who will introduce us to their Belgrade.

As always on our journeys, we will be a small group, treated to private visits and talks with writers, artists and academics. In Belgrade, an acclaimed Serbian writer will take us on a literary and historical tour of the city and we will dine at the family restaurant of another literary star.
