A Manor House in Romania

Spring and Autumn, 2022

Experience the douceur de vivre in an 18th-century manor house, set in the rolling countryside of northern Romania, and carefully restored by its present owner, whose family acquired the estate through marriage in 1836. Our pace is deliberately leisured, to suit our unhurried setting, and we will have the place to ourselves. There is time to read, write, paint or walk in Valeni manor’s parkland with its rare trees and long views towards the Carpathian mountains. The wider estate is rich in wildlife, with deer, wild boar, hoopoes, bee-eaters and Ural and Eagle Owls. Colonies of Swallowtail butterflies are to be found. Here too is thrilling evidence of great antiquity – on the estate are the remains of a Dacian citadel, and a significant Dacian cemetery, and astonishing ceramics of the Cucuteni culture were discovered here.

From our comfortable base we set out to visit princely houses, peasants’ cottages, great libraries and flourishing monasteries – all within two hours’ drive. We spend just one night away – in order to visit the astonishing painted monasteries of northern Bucovina. There are many other delightful surprises in store on this week-long sojourn in the Romanian countryside.
