Slow Walks around the
Saxon Villages

Transylvania, Romania

Friends often dream of walking in the idyllic Transylvanian countryside – as do we – and have often asked us to recommend routes. Until this year, we have been hesitant to do so, as paths aren’t always clear, signage unpredictable, and sheepdogs can be a menace. But now, at last, we have found an expert Romanian guide on our wavelength, with whom we have arranged a series of delightful walks at the end of the Transylvanian Book Festival.

From our base in the Saxon fortified village of Alma Vii, we will explore the enchanting landscape, walking over hills, through forest, and between ancient villages in the company of our guide.  We will walk in the area of the Saxon villages, around Mălâncrav and Sighişoara, and finish our explorations in Sibiu, the old Saxon capital of Hermannstadt.

The pace is deliberately slow, 3-4 hours’ walking spread out over a day, so there will be time to meet farmers and shepherds, botanists and craftspeople, and to hear about their struggles for sustainability and to discuss social and political issues of past and present. As ever, of course, we will enjoy delicious local food and drink along the way.The September tour has been designed to take place immediately after the Transylvanian Book Festival, and to complement the talks and themes of the festival. Equally, you are welcome to join us without having attended the festival. All walks will be led by our expert Romanian guide.
