Romania

Both Lucy and Bronwen have a decades long attachment to Romania. We offer a variety of tours there with access to places and people far removed from the tourist trail.

Modern Romania comprises the former principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, both previously part of the Ottoman Empire and retaining their Orthodox faith, and Transylvania (once part of the Kingdom of Hungary). This mix makes for fascinating journeys in a country rich in culture, literature, art and music and offers varied and ancient landscapes straddling Europe and the Balkans.

The whole country, but especially Transylvania and the Carpathians, is rich in flora and fauna. Butterflies and wild flowers are especially plentiful and exciting for specialists and amateurs alike. It is ideal for walkers and for riding tours as there are no fences and the ancient deciduous forests give way to unmade roads.

Outside major cities, we prefer to stay in small hotels and private houses. Eco tourism has played an important part giving life to the beautiful villages. Bucharest has many good hotels as have the larger cities such as Timisoara. The food is central European with a Turkish mix and we choose the menus carefully. Romanian wine and schnapps are plentiful everywhere.
